'Freeware' software/programs ! What exactly are they ?

Freeware doesn't always include spyware. Be very wary of the install process and read EVERYTHING when you install freeware. Because most freeware have some sort of affiliation with other programs and they WILL install other things on your system. Legit freeware programs give you the choice of installing them or not. ANd always use a legit download source like CNET.
