Where did the phrase "kangaroo court" orginate?

Possibly California or Texas. The "kangaroo" element refers to the "jumps" in procedure which no proper court would tolerate. There's some suggestion that it was first applied in dealing with claim jumpers on the Californian goldfields, who were mostly recent arrivals from the Australian gold fields.
