ANYONE know 1978 discovery of square cave, ANDES Peru going thru to 3 miles below the Pacific, 4000 years ago?

Around 1978 I was reading about a scientific expedition in Peru, from LIMA, where researchers were using a team of donkeys to carry miles of wires and generators and mini submarines through the jungle, up the inner side of the mountain, to where a square cave was found. It went from the top of the mountain, down through the entire mountain on an angle and continued 3 miles under the Pacific Ocean on the other side. There were photographs of the researchers and crews, and it really looked like one of the most important discoveries ever made. The Cave was about 100 feet square, with laser- straight walls, that were 4000 to 5000 years old, with no chisel or machine marks, ( something we could not even do today ). They were using cameras on the mini subs to try to see what was at the end of the tunnel over 3 miles under the Pacific Ocean. I moved twice, and was very busy with new situations and lost all track. Now when I search National Geographic and other scientific publications, and look for any mention of this discovery, there is absolutely NOTHING ! All trace of the entire research effort are gone ... ! Does anyone in Peru or in a Scientific organization know what happened? The miles of solid rock were "cut like hot knife through er" and absolutely straight for miles - over 4000 years ago. This makes the great pyramids look like a sandcastle on the beach, and yet, now, there is absolutely no trace of it ! Anyone with information would really help by verifying this adventure... thanks
